The Socceroos' recent defeat to Venezuela exposed some worrying cracks in their game. After a promising start under Tony Popovic, the team suffered a second consecutive loss, this time 1-0 against Venezuela at Houston's Shell Energy Stadium. This followed an 11-game unbeaten streak, making this setback particularly concerning. While the loss to the United States showed some fight, this match was marked by a concerning lack of aggression and control.
Venezuela, ranked 50th in the world, dominated possession early on, holding the ball for 75% of the first 20 minutes, eventually settling at 66% by the final whistle. This contrasted sharply with the approach of their previous coach, who was sacked after failing to qualify for the World Cup with an average possession rate of only 39% during the qualification campaign. Venezuela's strategy involved an immediate press whenever Australia had the ball, disrupting their attempts to build momentum.
Despite some early chances, including two shots on goal by Mohamed Touré, the Socceroos struggled to make an impact. Popovic acknowledged the missed opportunities, stating, "We had some great opportunities early in the game that we really should have scored, and I’m sure the game would have been different."
Australia, after trying to be more physical against Canada and the US, found themselves on the back foot. Popovic noted the team's struggles in winning duels and second balls, which hindered their ability to press effectively. This allowed Venezuela to create numerous scoring chances. Debutant goalkeeper Patrick Beach made several crucial saves, but couldn't prevent Venezuela from taking the lead in the 38th minute. Ender Echenique set up Jesús Ramírez for the goal. This goal highlighted a difficult period for Australia, compounded by a rash challenge from Nestory Irankunda and an injury to Jason Geria.
The goal also exposed the space left by Craig Goodwin, who was playing at left wingback. Popovic replaced him with Callum Elder at half-time.
With three debutants starting, this match offered a chance for experimentation. The return of injured players and another debutant provided a glimmer of hope. Popovic emphasized the lessons learned, saying, "We created some great opportunities; didn’t take them. But overall, there’s a lot of lessons, a lot of young players [playing], and you look at that, where they are now, and I’m sure in the future, they’ll be much better.”
But here's where it gets controversial... Seven months before the World Cup, this lacklustre performance raises serious questions.
