New Youth Mental Health Facility Set to Open in Erindale (2026)

A Game-Changer for Youth Mental Health: Erindale’s New Purpose-Built Facility Sparks Hope and Debate

But here's where it gets controversial... While the move promises a fresh start, some question the environmental impact of removing 16 trees for construction. Is progress worth the cost to nature? Weigh in below!

Exciting news is on the horizon for Canberra’s youth mental health services, as plans are set in motion to relocate to a state-of-the-art facility in Erindale Business Park. By early 2027, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) will bid farewell to its current home at North Canberra Hospital, making way for the upcoming Northside Hospital. This transition marks a significant step toward providing young people and their families with a more tailored and supportive environment.

The new single-storey facility, designed by Billard Leece Partnership, will occupy a 10,902 square metre block near the intersection of Lansell Circuit and Ashley Drive. To accommodate this development, two existing commercial buildings will be replaced, along with the addition of 39 parking spaces. The government promises a home-like atmosphere, complete with a central courtyard, communal play areas, and even a basketball court—a far cry from traditional clinical settings. And this is the part most people miss... The design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a space where young people feel safe, understood, and empowered.

Here’s how the layout breaks down: The western side will serve as the main entry, offering easy access from the car park to a welcoming reception, waiting lounge, and group therapy rooms. The southern side will house consultation and staff rooms, while the eastern side will feature a school classroom, staff consult room, and a sensory nook—a thoughtful addition for those who benefit from calming, tactile experiences. The landscaped courtyard and open spaces are designed to foster connection and healing, blending indoor and outdoor therapy seamlessly.

Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith highlights Erindale’s strategic advantages, including its accessibility via public transport, proximity to green spaces, and potential for future expansion. “This location is well-suited to meet the current and future needs of young people and families,” she stated. The move also ensures continuity of care during the construction of Northside Hospital, a win-win for both healthcare providers and their clients.

What’s truly remarkable is the collaborative effort behind the design. Staff and students played a pivotal role in shaping the facility, ensuring it reflects the real-life needs and experiences of those who will use it. From the Cottage Day Program for adolescents aged 12-18 to the Childhood Early Intervention Program for primary school-aged children, the facility will offer three interconnected programs in a calm, therapeutic setting.

But here's a thought to ponder... While the new facility promises innovation, will it truly address the growing demand for youth mental health services in Canberra? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Construction is slated to begin in early 2026, pending planning approvals, with the current CAMHS Cottage at Bruce remaining operational until completion. The public has until 23 January to comment on the development application—a chance to voice concerns, praise, or suggestions. This isn’t just a building; it’s a symbol of hope and progress for young people in our community.
