The MLB offseason is heating up, and former Milwaukee Brewers GM David Stearns is at the center of the action, facing a potential setback in his big-city makeover of the New York Mets. The early moves of the 2025-26 offseason have seen National League contenders strategizing for a smoother path to the postseason. The American League seems to be gaining momentum. Josh Naylor, the most significant free agent hitter so far, has re-signed with the Seattle Mariners, a team he was traded to by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The St. Louis Cardinals traded starting pitcher Sonny Gray to the Boston Red Sox. Additionally, Dylan Cease, formerly of the San Diego Padres, agreed to a massive seven-year, $210 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, the defending AL champions. Adding to this, the Baltimore Orioles signed Ryan Helsley, a reliever who spent his career in the NL.
The New York Mets, now led by David Stearns, have made the most significant move in the NL. Stearns traded outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers for second baseman Marcus Semien. This move sparked speculation that the Mets are aiming to free up payroll and outfield space to sign Kyle Tucker this offseason.
Stearns and the Mets are clearly trying to shake things up after their expensive roster failed to reach the 2025 postseason. With Pete Alonso entering free agency and closer Edwin Díaz seeking a large contract, Stearns has crucial decisions to make.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Mets were reportedly trying to trade a veteran starting pitcher to gain financial flexibility. However, the pitcher, Kodai Senga, has thrown a wrench in Stearns' plans by expressing his desire to stay with the Mets, despite trade rumors. Senga also has a no-trade clause, which allows him to block deals with ten selected teams.
After an impressive 2023 season, Senga's performance has been inconsistent. His $28 million owed over the next two seasons looks less like a bargain and more like a way for Stearns to make him an attractive trade candidate. The emergence of young pitchers in the Mets' rotation, such as Nolan McLean, Brandon Sproat, and Jonah Tong, adds another layer to the situation.
Stearns might be looking back to his time in Milwaukee, where he built a strong rotation at a low cost. Trading Senga could open up opportunities for these young pitchers and provide financial flexibility to pursue high-profile free agents.
In an ideal scenario for Stearns, Senga would be traded. However, Senga prefers to stay in New York, and his no-trade clause complicates matters. Although the clause has been modified to a ten-team no-trade clause, it still gives Senga significant control over his future.
And this is the part most people miss... Keeping Senga doesn't necessarily prevent the Mets from signing a top free agent like Tucker. However, if a bidding war for Tucker erupts, the Mets might be less likely to compete with teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers with Senga's contract on the books.
