The University of Miami's football program experienced a remarkable turnaround under the leadership of head coach Mario Cristobal. In just three years, the team went from a struggling 5-7 record to a playoff contender, thanks to the unwavering belief of a select few players and coaches who saw potential beyond the initial setbacks.
When Cristobal took over, the program was in disarray, having suffered a humiliating loss to Middle Tennessee State and consecutive defeats at the hands of Florida State, Clemson, and Pittsburgh. The average margin of defeat during that stretch was a staggering 32.7 points, and the team was outscored 127-29. It was understandable to have doubts about the program's future, especially for top-tier recruits who had more stable options.
However, a group of players, including defensive end Rueben Bain, offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa, and running back Mark Fletcher, chose to believe in Cristobal's vision. They were among the highest-ranked signees in his first full recruiting class, despite the program's uncertain state. These players became the agents of change, leading the Hurricanes to their first-ever College Football Playoff win.
Fletcher, who had previously committed to Ohio State, had a breakthrough performance in College Station, rushing for 173 yards on 17 carries and setting up Miami's only touchdown with a 56-yard run late in the fourth quarter. Bain, projected as a top NFL pick, recorded three sacks and blocked a field goal, earning the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award. Mauigoa, tasked with handling one of the best pass rushers in the country, held his own, allowing only one sack and helping to pave the way for Miami's successful ground attack.
These players' belief in Cristobal's leadership was instrumental in the team's success. As Fletcher stated, 'Nobody believed that we could do this. We never really worried about those voices anyway. We're very grateful and blessed to be in this position.'
The class also included other notable contributors, such as offensive lineman Samson Okunlola, who has developed patiently and is now rotating with the starting left guard. Linebackers and cornerbacks also played significant roles, with Raul Aguirre Jr. and Damari Brown making steady contributions. Cristobal's formula for success has been centered around high school recruiting and player development, with Miami winning more games each season since his arrival.
The Hurricanes' success continued, with a 7-6 record and a win against Texas A&M in the SEC. In 2024, they were in contention for a playoff spot, finishing with 10 wins for the first time since 2017. This season, Miami is set to play in the postseason for the first time in this new era of college football, having reached the 11-win mark for the first time since 2003. They will face the defending national champions, Ohio State, in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Eve, a testament to Cristobal's leadership and the players' unwavering belief.
