LONDON (AP) — Looking for a unique gift for the royal enthusiast in your life? Consider a Christmas stocking crafted from the very fabric of King Charles III's Sandringham estate. This extraordinary project, initiated by the King's charitable foundation, showcases the preservation of traditional skills and crafts. The stocking's creation is a testament to the dedication of the Dumfries House Sewing Bee, a group of talented women who hand-stitched each piece with precision and care.
In the heart of Scotland, the 18th-century mansion buzzed with activity as the sewing circle deftly worked their needles through the royal fabric. Christine Wilson, a retired finance officer, shared her enthusiasm, "It’s been absolutely great. The sewing bee is a wonderful community of friends, and we’re proud to support charities through our efforts."
The result of their labor is a collection of 25 unique stockings, each numbered individually. The final stocking, numbered 25, will be presented to the King as a special Christmas gift. The auction, which runs until midnight on December 12, promises to be a significant fundraiser for the King's Foundation. This initiative supports the foundation's mission to provide training in practical skills, such as hospitality and animal husbandry, to over 15,000 young people annually.
"We envision these stockings becoming cherished family heirlooms, passed down through generations," said Sarah McClymont, the lead tutor for the Future Textiles initiative. "We hope the winner will treasure them for decades to come."
This is the third auction held by the foundation in recent years, showcasing the foundation's commitment to creative fundraising. The project began in 2023 with the creation of kimono jackets from curtains once adorning Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. In 2024, students from the furniture school at Highgrove Gardens crafted footstools upholstered with fabric from curtains that once graced the palace and castle. With an abundance of royal windows, the supply of gently used fabric is seemingly endless.
The King's charitable endeavors not only support his foundation but also contribute to the preservation of traditional crafts and the empowerment of young people through practical skills training.
