GOG Acquired by Co-Founder Michał Kiciński: What's Next for DRM-Free Gaming? (2026)

In a significant move that has captured the attention of the gaming community, Michał Kiciński, one of the co-founders of CD PROJEKT and a key shareholder, has completed his acquisition of GOG, which was previously a part of the CD PROJEKT Group. GOG, renowned for being the leading digital distribution platform that champions DRM-free gaming, aims to ensure that games remain accessible forever.

Kiciński, who has played a pivotal role in shaping the Polish video game landscape, co-established GOG back in 2008. He reflects on the foundation of GOG, stating, “From the very beginning, GOG has been built on strong values and clear principles. When Marcin Iwiński and I conceived the idea for GOG, our vision was straightforward: to reintroduce classic games to players and guarantee that once you purchase a game, it is yours to keep — permanently.”

With this new ownership structure, GOG will maintain its independence and continue to uphold its core philosophy of supporting both gamers and developers through its commitment to DRM-free gaming.

Kiciński elaborates on the shared ethos between CD PROJEKT and GOG, stating, “Both organizations are rooted in values such as freedom, independence, and a genuine sense of ownership. I have faith that CD PROJEKT, recognized for its exceptional AAA titles, will consistently back GOG’s offerings — positioning GOG as the premier destination to acquire games like The Witcher and Cyberpunk, including upcoming titles we eagerly await.” He adds, “As someone who has matured alongside gaming, I frequently revisit classic titles and have a profound appreciation for the creativity behind them. I genuinely believe that well-crafted classics can provide just as much enjoyment as fresh releases. In terms of pure playability, timeless games often emerge as reliable choices, particularly in an industry saturated with countless low-quality smaller games. Beyond just preserving these classics, GOG actively seeks out new games that embody a retro spirit. I am currently involved in the development of several such games, which will undoubtedly make a notable debut on GOG in 2026.”

Maciej Gołębiewski, managing director of GOG, shares Kiciński’s vision, asserting, “GOG and Michał Kiciński share a common conviction that games should endure endlessly. In an increasingly crowded market that often overlooks classic titles, we are doubling down on what makes GOG unique: reviving classic games, ensuring they remain playable on modern systems, and helping outstanding games connect with their audiences over time.”

For more than 17 years, GOG has functioned under the umbrella of the CD PROJEKT Group, working closely with CD PROJEKT RED to deliver major titles like The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 to global audiences.

Michał Nowakowski, Joint CEO of CD PROJEKT, discussed this transition, saying, “With our focus now squarely on an ambitious development trajectory and expanding franchises with high-quality offerings, we believe this is the right moment for this change. For quite some time, GOG has been operating independently, and now it transitions to capable hands. We are confident that with Michał Kiciński's support, one of GOG’s original founders, its future will be filled with exciting projects and successes. We extend our gratitude to the GOG team for years of fruitful collaboration and wish them the best moving forward. To the GOG community, I say ‘see you around,’ as our forthcoming releases will naturally be available on GOG as well.”

Kiciński is purchasing 100% of GOG sp. z o.o. for PLN 90.7 million. This acquisition is fully financed through committed funding secured at the time of closing and does not require him to sell any of his shares in CD PROJEKT. Following this transaction, CD PROJEKT and GOG have established a distribution agreement that outlines the terms for future cooperation, including plans to release upcoming games from CD PROJEKT RED on GOG.

GoodGame Advisors LLC acted as the financial advisor for CD PROJEKT during this transaction.

Further details regarding this acquisition can be found in current report no. 20/2025 (https://www.cdprojekt.com/en/investors/regulatory-announcements/current-report-no-20-2025/) issued by CD PROJEKT.
