Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Dominates Game Awards 2025 - 9 Wins Including GOTY Breakdown! (2026)

Hold onto your berets, folks, because a French indie game just stole the show at the Game Awards! Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a title you might not have heard of before, swept the competition, taking home a staggering nine awards, including the coveted 'Best Video Game of the Year' title. It's a true underdog story!

Guillaume Broche of Sandfall Interactive, the studio behind Clair Obscur, couldn't hide his surprise, quipping, "What a weird timeline for us." He also gave a shout-out to the unsung heroes of the gaming world: the YouTube tutorial creators. Apparently, they were crucial in helping the team learn how to make a game in the first place!

Clair Obscur, Sandfall's debut title, plunges players into a post-apocalyptic world with a distinctly French flair. The game follows a band of characters battling against seemingly insurmountable odds.

But here's where it gets controversial... Despite going up against industry titans like Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding 2 and Nintendo's Donkey Kong Bananza, Clair Obscur emerged victorious. It was nominated in a record number of categories, showcasing its widespread appeal and quality.

The game's journey began in 2020 as a passion project by Broche, who was then working at Ubisoft, a major French gaming company. He teamed up with ex-colleague Tom Guillermin to form Sandfall Interactive in Montpellier, France, the same year. They secured a publishing deal with UK-based Kepler Interactive in 2022, which provided the financial backing to bring their vision to life.

Since its release in April of this year, Clair Obscur has already sold an impressive 5 million copies. Broche shared his heartfelt gratitude, saying, "This is a passion project into which we poured our heart and soul. To be rewarded like this is just wonderful!"

The game's popularity has led to a fun trend: fans are showing up at conventions and game fairs dressed in the iconic striped mariner's shirt and red beret, a classic French look.

Clair Obscur is an action role-playing game where a small group of characters fight to protect their home city, Lumiere, which strongly resembles Belle Epoque Paris, against a powerful threat. Inspired by Japanese games such as Final Fantasy, it offers turn-based combat against various monsters.

What sets Clair Obscur apart is its emotional depth, endearing characters, and innovative gameplay. It introduces rhythm-based elements to the combat system, allowing players to parry enemy attacks in a unique way.

Industry specialist Benoit Reinier praised Sandfall for creating a polished game that could compete with major titles. The game's music also played a crucial role in immersing players in its world, earning it awards for narrative, role-playing, and music score.

French President Emmanuel Macron even chimed in, thanking the team for highlighting French creativity.

So, what do you think? Did Clair Obscur deserve all the accolades? Do you agree with the game's success, or do you think another title should have won? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
