BYD Atto 3 Review: Redesigned with Luxury and Power (2026)

BYD's Atto 3: A Bold Leap Forward, But Does it Stick the Landing?

While the exterior of the BYD Atto 3 might be described as understated, its interior is anything but! Prepare for a delightful surprise as you step inside, where BYD has truly embraced a playful and distinctive design. Forget bland uniformity; here, you'll find charmingly rounded door handles, air vents that cleverly mimic a CD rack, and even guitar strings adorning the door panels. It’s a space that clearly prioritizes personality and a touch of whimsy.

A Feast for the Senses (Mostly!)

One of the most striking aspects of the Atto 3's cabin is the luxurious feel. Nearly every surface is swathed in soft-touch leather or plush suede, immediately elevating it above many rivals in its class. Cars like the (hypothetical) Elroq or Explorer often leave you with a less refined experience, showcasing hard, scratchy plastics. The Atto 3, however, offers a tactile pleasure. The air vents are a particular triumph; a satisfying 'clink' sound accompanies their opening, and a reassuring 'thump' as they close. These are details you'd expect to find in a car from a much higher price bracket!

But here's where it gets controversial... The main point of contact for any driver, the steering wheel, doesn't quite live up to the interior's high standards. Its upholstery feels rather plasticky, a noticeable dip in quality when compared to the otherwise excellent ambiance of the cabin. It's a shame that this one element detracts from an otherwise well-executed interior for its segment.

A Breath of Fresh Air (Literally!)

Great news for those sensitive to new car smells! The rather potent chemical odor that plagued earlier versions of the Atto 3 has been completely eliminated. On a warm, sunny day, the cabin smelled as neutral and pleasant as you'd expect from any new vehicle.

Clever Design, But Room for Improvement

Shifting the gear selector to the steering column has been a masterstroke, freeing up valuable real estate on the center console. This allows for a convenient wireless phone charger. And this is the part most people miss... While the intention is great, the execution of the charging pad's rubber surface lacks sufficient grip. If you drive with any enthusiasm, or even just brake a little too assertively, your phone can easily slide off the charging pad, interrupting the charging process. A minor annoyance, perhaps, but one that can be frustrating.

Button Placement: A Matter of Opinion?

The placement of certain controls raises a few eyebrows. The buttons for selecting drive modes and adjusting brake regeneration strength (standard or high) are nestled on the center console, within a cluster of other buttons. They lack distinct tactile differences, meaning you often have to take your eyes off the road to identify which button you're pressing. Wouldn't it be more intuitive and safer to have these controls readily accessible on the steering wheel, where there's ample space to accommodate them?

Comfort for All, Especially the Long-Haul Driver

The driving position is generally comfortable, particularly for shorter individuals. However, those with longer limbs might find the steering wheel's adjustability somewhat limited. While it does tilt and telescope, the range of motion is restricted. On a more positive note, the driver's seat offers a wider array of adjustments and now features electrically adjustable lumbar support. This is a significant upgrade, especially for those who undertake longer journeys, addressing a key drawback of the previous Atto 3.

Tech That Impresses

The touchscreen boasts crisp graphics and responds swiftly to your touch. Pairing your smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is a breeze. However, you might not even need to connect your phone, as the Atto 3 now comes equipped with built-in Google apps, including Maps, which is incredibly useful when you're navigating unfamiliar territory.

The Climate Control Conundrum

Where the Atto 3 continues to divide opinion is its reliance on the touchscreen for climate control. The absence of physical buttons means you're relegated to a permanent toolbar on the screen. While this might be fine if you set it and forget it, making adjustments on the fly, especially in changing weather or when you're simply feeling a bit too warm or cold, requires a significant and potentially distracting glance away from the road. It's a design choice that prioritizes a minimalist aesthetic over immediate, tactile control.

A Subtle Warning from the Car Itself

Interestingly, every time the climate controls were adjusted, the Atto 3's driver attention monitor would chime, urging the driver to focus on the road. It's almost as if the car itself is acknowledging that its control layout isn't as intuitive as it could be, a point that sparks debate about the balance between modern design and practical usability.

Space for Everyone and Everything

In the rear, there's ample space to comfortably accommodate passengers of all sizes. This generous rear seating likely contributed to the previous Atto 3's popularity among minicab drivers. The increased boot space hasn't come at the expense of rear passenger comfort, which is a welcome improvement. Plus, the added convenience of being able to store charging cables in the 'frunk' (the storage compartment under the bonnet) is a thoughtful touch.

What do you think? Is the Atto 3's unique interior design a breath of fresh air, or do the compromises in control placement and steering wheel quality detract from the overall experience? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
